A BICYCLE COUNTRY
Written by NILO CRUZ
“A BICYCLE COUNTRY” traces the journey of three characters who decide to leave Cuba by raft for a better life in the US in the early 1990s. This production opened with great success in Spanish at the XIII Iberamericano Festival de Teatro in Bogotá, Colombia, in April 2012. This will be the first time it will be presented in English.
NILO CRUZ was the first Latin--American writer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, which he received for his play “Anna in the Tropics” (2003). He has written more than a dozen plays and is currently working on an opera.
There will be a talkback with Nilo Cruz and Carlos Riobó (CCNY) after the performance on 10/12/12.
“A BICYCLE COUNTRY” is directed by Germán Jaramillo, director of ID Studio, who was nominated for best actor in Barbet Schroeder’s 2001 film, “Our Lady of the Assassins.” Frank Rodriguez (Julio), Hannia Guillen (Inés), and Abdel González (Pepe), three fine actors from Uruguay, Cuba, and Puerto Rico respectively, have appeared in multiple productions in television and film as well as Repertorio Español in the US. Music is by Pablo Mayor, set design by Adrian Jones, lighting by Miguel Valderrama and Sound Design by Jeremy Lee.
For ten years, ID STUDIO THEATER has focused on the creation of new audiences and performers among immigrant communities in New York, particularly from Latin America, with an emphasis on groups that have little access to mainstream culture and educational opportunities. By tapping into the rich artistic resources of Latin American countries, with the benefit of Crystal Field’s support for productions both in NYC and Bogotá, ID Studio’s work establishes a dialogue between cultures that stimulates creativity and strengthens and integrates immigrant community members through the performing arts.
