By mid-1966, John Coltrane was at the top of the world. He was the new father of two baby boys, had released the epic, seminal, life-altering album ‘A Love Supreme’ the year before, and was widely regarded as the greatest saxophonist not only of his time, but of all time. He was planning a tour of Japan, unheard of for the mid-1960s, and was a pivotal figure in the fight against systemic racism.

But his piano player has just left the group. And now his health may be failing him.

John Coltrane was an enigmatic figure, and as a result the subject of hundreds of books, which all ask the same question: What is it like being the best at your craft? What drove the man to do what he did?

Mr. Liebowitz, in his 21st play, attempts to answer that, and several other pertinent questions, in a quest to get at the heart of the matter.
