Theater for the New City and director Michael Luggio bring Steven Dietz’ This Random World to TNC for a 3 night limited engagement September 21st-23rd.

Mining the comedy of missed connections, This Random World asks the serious question of how often we travel parallel paths through the world without noticing. An ailing woman, Scottie is planning one final trip to cross off her bucket list. But Scottie is insistent: her adult children are not to know. In fact, they know very little about their mother or even themselves. Throughout this play, we follow a dynamic ensemble of interconnected individuals navigating their own complex lives, weaving a story of hope, failure, inspiration, and longing.

Playwright Steven Dietz (Fiction, Becky’s New Car, Private Eyes) was inspired to write the play
by a surprising ‘missed connection’ in his own life.

“My wife and I were both on the same plane flying back from different cities and didn’t even know that we were two rows apart on the same plane. As I get older, I realize there were different paths my life could have taken–completely different paths. If the day I met my wife we had been two rows apart, my life would be completely different now. Trying to explore the life that’s sort of right beside our life– the life that we’re not living– that interests me enormously…”

The irony of this experience is at the heart of the play, which received its world premiere at the 2016 Humana Festival for New American Plays at Actors’ Theater of Louisville. This Random World is a charming, funny, and intimate meditation on the power of chance and how we might be closer to each other than we’ll ever know.
