“They Came to the Castle” by Barbara Kahn, performed by Lisa Monde

The show must go ON…LINE. Theater for the New City (TNC) is keeping theater alive with a monologue from “They Came to the Castle: Immigrants, a Tenor and Lola Montez”, by Barbara Kahn. The play is set in New York City in the mid 19th century. Castle Garden, in Battery Park, was the landing place before the facilities on Ellis Island. Lisa Monde portrays Mina (Romina Castello), an earlier immigrant from Italy. ”

The show must go ON…LINE. During this time of social isolation, Theater for the New City (TNC) continues to keep arts alive with an opening scene from Frank J. Avella’s play, MAD. The story follows five actors as they embark on a controversial new Broadway play. Central to the work is the struggle of a young closeted-gay movie star who must contend with keeping his sexuality a secret so he can continue to pursue his passion.

Barbara Kahn’s play, They Came to the Castle: Immigrants, a Tenor and Lola Montez is set in the mid-19th century Landing Depot at Castle Garden in Battery Park in NYC during a time when refugees and immigrants were welcome in the U.S. Clara (Leila Stricker) left the violence against Jews in Eastern Europe looking for safety in a new land.
